Charcoal Portraiture with Drew Miller


This workshop offers an in depth look at tools and techniques used to create portraits in charcoal. 

  • Demonstration / explanation

  • Discussion

  • One-on-one guidance

  • Mindset to create  

This workshop will include demos as well as hands on guidance. We will cover placement, accuracy, values as well as edges and texture.

Class fee: $120 for 3 weeks

Recommended supplies list:

  • Soft knife w/ covers, pointed no. 4

  • Assortment of generals charcoal pencils (Hb and B pencils)

  • Nitram charcoal sticks (blue, green, orange) 

  • Kneaded eraser

  • Pencil style eraser

  • Strathmore 3 ply illustration board 

  • A sketch board or something hard to mount your paper. If you do not have one you can borrow.

  • If you prefer, you can bring a table easel. Some students prefer to work at an angle.
